No.0089:Throw away to get started
April 30,2021

Yesterday, I threw away the surfing longboard I bought about 20 years ago. It's been about 15 years since I've been away from surfing, but I couldn't throw it away because I was full of memories, and a huge board of nearly 3 meters continued to occupy a lot of space in the storeroom. Recently, I'm crazy about camping and I have to make room for storage! So we have decided to put an end to the long-term postponement. The satisfaction of being able to store it for a new lifestyle counteracts the loneliness of throwing away the past. In order to start anew like this, it is necessary to throw it away first, and today I will write about such things.

Under the deflationary situation where the prices of goods and services have been declining for a long time, it has become possible to buy moderate quality products such as Daiso and other 100-yen shops and UNIQLO's fast fashion at low prices. Therefore, if you are not careful, the whole house will be flooded with things. When you buy a new one, you have to throw away the old ones. Meanwhile, I was surprised at the word " Discarding is also a cost." at some seminar before. You have to think about the cost not only when you buy it but also when you throw it away. In other words, costs include the psychological burden mentioned above, the time and effort required to actually throw it away, and the environmental load indicated in the SDGs that have become more and more frequently requested these days. With this in mind, I feel the sophistication of the European way of thinking about using good things that are not cheap and sometimes repairing them for a long time. It would be a problem for companies to use it for too long...

I am in the business of creating systems. In creating a system, what do we want to achieve? We receive a variety of requests, both large and small, from people in many departments and positions. However, just like building a house, there is an upper limit to the amount of money that can be spent to build a system, and in many cases, the amount of money required to meet all the requests far exceeds the budget. So, to some degree, it becomes necessary to ask the customer to abandon his or her requests. In this case, I often hear requests such as, "Keep what we have done so far." I think that people have a latent resistance to change and a desire to maintain the status quo built into their genes. This is because it reduces the probability of encountering troublesome problems. However, as the environment around us changes (e.g., lodging facilities, pubs, and airlines that lost customers due to the Corona disaster), it is inevitable that what is required of the system will change accordingly. It is my job to appeal to people how wonderful it will be after the change, to suppress their fears and troublesome feelings about the change, and to encourage them to abandon the system first and then start anew.

I spend a lot of time studying English lately. With the corona wreck accelerating the flow of remote work, I anticipate that the number of regular members of the company will decrease in the future. On the other hand, I expect that the number of project-type jobs will increase, where there are jobs first, and then the necessary human resources who are not bound by the framework of the company gather. In that case, there will be more opportunities to form a team with the most suitable members on the earth and work, so communication in English is indispensable for that. However, my daily time is limited, so if I want to spend more time learning English, I have to cut down on that much. So I decided to cut the time to dig deeper into IT technology.I work in IT, and at first glance, spending less time honing that core skill is not a good thing. However, from a long-term perspective, I decided that acquiring the ability to freely exchange opinions with the world's best engineers in English would far increase my value as an engineer, even if I deducted the technical knowledge that would be lost in exchange for learning English.

As mentioned above, it would be wonderful if you could improve yourself by choosing the priorities that are appropriate for your situation, and repeatedly giving up or discarding something in order to do so. Like the J-League, which keeps the best league by dropping the lower teams to the lower leagues and raising the higher teams from the lower leagues to the higher leagues. In a similar way, if negative emotions such as sadness, frustration, and anger are too strong, they will stay there and you will not be able to move on. So, even though I will continue to feel them for a while, when I decide that I have had enough, I want to extract only the necessary lessons, put the rest in a corner of my mind, and start anew with a reset feeling. In fact, now is the right time for me to do just that. I'm going to try to start something.
