No.0111:difference ~ 1 + 1 > 2

February 28,2023

Depending on the environment in which they were born and raised, their innate character and physical strength, the confidence they have gained or lost through experience, the amount of assets they possess, and so on,  The responses to the exact same stimulus are diverse. For example, if you greet an acquaintance, but receive a gloomy attitude back, people perceive it very differently. Some people may wonder if the person is not in good physical condition, and  be concerned about the person's condition, but they are not  disturbed by this. Others may feel that what I said or did yesterday may have offended him, and they may feel depressed.

In the midst of this intermingling of diverse personalities, the importance of diversity, which can achieve more than the sum of each individual's potential by successfully combining and complementing different personalities, seems to have been mentioned more often recently as an opportunity to change Japan's current stagnant (decayed?) situation caused by uniformity. On the other hand, there is the unfortunate combination of " differences" that only leads to mutual exhaustion, too. They point out each other's faults, hurt each other, drag each other down, and it is an unpleasant relationship. It is said that it is difficult to foster "innovation" that will support the future in an environment where "conservatives" who have achieved results in the past and are still the pillars of corporate performance even though future growth is not expected, hold power. Because conservatives beat and crush innovators. "What are you playing at when you're not making any money?" Just like that.

When trade was prohibited during the Edo period, the space that allowed singularity was limited to Dejima in Nagasaki. In the same way, a separate protected area established to ensure that innovation is not crushed by conservation in today's companies is likened to a "Dejima". It is a system where innovators with novel and innovative ideas innovate on a protected island from the archaic in-house "elite" who are bound by "common sense," and establish the pillars for future growth.

There are various types of people: those who are strangely fearful of failure and defensive, and on the other hand, those who are strangely inclined to fulfill their own wishes rather than lose something. In Japan today, the latter type of person is in high demand. But You've been courageous enough to take the plunge, and very few things work out. Therefore, I would like to be very conscious of such things as resilience to try again even if it doesn't work out, the proper use of the money to keep it flowing, and the attractiveness of gathering support by successfully communicating one's thoughts and making people excited.

It is a nice approach that combines opposites and flexibly adapts to an environment that has changed. However, if a period of lackluster results continues for a long time, the relationship may become a mutual inward criticism, and fall into a relationship of mutual exhaustion. It would be wonderful to achieve a result of 1 + 1 > 2 by respecting, accepting, and forgiving the other person.  What to do? is important, but who you do it with? is equally important.
